IMMERSION:
ARTEFACTING INTO DHARAVI
The Engine That Runs Mumbai
ALEX WHITE MAZZARELLA + ARNE DE KNEGT
January 4-March 23, 2012
Gallery reception: Thursday, January 5, 6-9PM | Film and Q+A at
7PM
Featuring
mixed media paintings, photographs, and short videos generated by artist
and project director Alex White Mazzarella and his collaborative
of artists Arne de Knegt, Casey Nolan, Parasher Baruah
and Nishant Nayak during their immersion in Dharavi - a 0.67 square
mile tract in Mumbai, widely known as one of Asias largest slums.
Often labeled as a dangerous and violent area, the artwork presents an
alternate view of Dharavi - one filled with bustling energy, recycling,
collective living and an in-depth view of the Dharavi community. More

LIFE
IN THE VALLEYS OF OAXACA
ELIZABETH DOWNER
December
2, 2011-March 23, 2012
Elizabeth
Downer's explorations of Oaxaca, Mexico's central valleys unearthed the
rich traditions of the land -- Zapotec language, the campesino way of
life and the shifting ochre palette of the seasons.
Painting in the homes and fields of familieis and those who invited her
to share their traditions, Downer's work captures the beauty of the landscape
and spirit of the people, deeply tied to the earth, despite the undercurrents
of migration and change.
